ok so i got my stuff going
i have a good deal of equipment and im trying to setup
i dont have to buy much
one major thing i have to actually buy is SOMETHING that can compress, attack delay, do cool things, for the music that im making AND for the vocals im recording
im not sure if it is normal to use one machine to do all of the effects or not
and im not sure if the same one is used for different tracks in the music mix AND the vocals
i just wanna be able to handle the effects thing in one shot, just get one machine that will handle all of my FX needs
now if this isnt the way to go and the "thing" to do is buy like 3 machines then let me know (i probably wont do it, but tell me)
yea i dont know sh*t, thats why im here!

Some of the TC Electronic and Lexicon units will do time based effects like reverb, chorus, delay, etc. as well as compression. I don't know if you consider EQ an effect but that would probably require a separate unit. Actually, most folks probably use a software plug in to perform EQ.

Time based effects can also be done with software plug ins and the tracking software you own may have some of these. The speed of your computer usually dictates whether you go the hardware of software route for time based effects since the software versions can use up a lot of CPU time.

You may want to put some thought into having just one effects unit because the more you have, the more flavors you can use. No two effects from different manufactureres sound alike, just as no two Ales between different breweries taste the same. Effects provide a means of adding character to your recrodings, and the more variety you have, the more tools you have to choose from to weave together. Trust me, the more effects units you have from different manufacturere, the better.

There's a ton of info on these boards on FX units that you can search for. Lexicon seems to hold the high ground around here, but there are several others you may want to consider.

im not doing this computer style, my dad is actually doing his music (yea we're a musical family) that way and it just works better for me to do it this way: i have a 24 track 8 bus mixing console, my mpc2000xl sampler/drum machine with the 8-outputs, two turntables, pair of monitors, microphone, bass guitar, guitar, conga, keyboard, random stuff that makes noise, MYSELF!........so yea i just want to add some effects to the stuff i have going on my MPC cuz i didnt get the FX built into it (i figured that meant i couldnt use it on the vocals, therefore pissing me off and making me go buy an effects processor anyway)

thanks for the replys guys
i guess i will check out that popular brand and i will think about the idea of getting a few different toys for the sake of flavor
