kaleidoscopic renegade
I just got my Sonar 3.0 in the mail. It rules. Period.

What I want to know is: how can I use wet/dry effects envelopes in my tracks?

I applied an effects send envelope and applied it with some varied amounts of delay/chorus, but the amounts of my track's effects stayed constant.

What am I missing?

Which effect and what parameter did you envelope?

Here's what works for me for example,

- Single track with gtr
- Insert say the Sonitus Reverb in the FX Bin
- Right click on the track and select Envelopes-Create Track Envelope-Reverb
- I pick DRY and REVERB from the parameter list
- Stick some nodes on either envelope by right-clicking it
- Test playback

Seems to behave OK for me - same thing for aux busses

Are you a track insert or using an aux bus?

:) Q.

I'm clicking on the FX spot on the track. Probably the wrong spot.
It doesn't name the effects I've applied. Only "effects send"...
I'll try applying my effects other ways and see if the envelope option names the effect.
I've never used "busses" before...I've been using CEP for two years so this is all new to me :-)

Do you have the Aux Bux set up as "pre" or "post" fader?

I'm not certain, but I think if it is set up as pre-fader, the Track Send control would not have any effect (no pun intended).

In this case, you should either automate the Bus' Send/Return levels, or automate the Effect itself (through an effect envelope).

Or you could also change the Bus setting to post fader.

Another approach is to do as Qwerty suggested and put the effect directly on the Track rather than on a Bus, and then use an effect envelope on the Track. However, this approach would not work if you wanted to use the effect on multiple tracks.

All I'm doing is adding an effect to the track's effects bin. The effect appears on the track, but the envelope doesn't give me any option for effects except "effects send".
I also tried right-clicking on the WAV and adding an effect that way. Same deal. Track's processed, envelope has no influence.
I've combed the manual, and am feeling rather retarded about this 'un.

:-)

The Send-level is the amount of the original signal you want to send to the Aux bus'es. It has nothing to do with Insert-effects (as you're using if you use the tracks FX-field).

To use buss'es, load up the effects in the Buss FX-field. :)

How do I use just a plain old FX wet/dry buss-less effect envelope on a single track?
Do I need to use the buss?

No. The way you are using it is fine. However, the "send" envelope deals with the Bus not the track. Therefore you don't need (or want) a send envelope.

First, are you using an automatable effect? The effect has to be automatable in order to use an effects envelope. (Hint: All the Cakewalk effects that begin with "Fx" are automable, such as FxReverb.)

Once you have patched an automatable effect onto the track, right click in the track area to the right of the split (where the waveform shows up). Then choose Envelopes > Create Track Envelope. Then you should see a bunch of selections (Pan, Volume, Mute, etc.). There should now also be one for the effect you have patched.

That's what I was missing! Thanks.
I'd been trying to slap an envelope on my MobilOhm plugin and a few others.
I guess they just aren't automatable!
The "FX" Cakewalk plugins worked beautifully with envelopes.

As per my first post.

Q.

I didn't get it, because with CEP, I can use envelopes with almost any plugin.
With Sonar, it's restricted to Cakewalk FX plugs...

Actually I believe it's restricted to plugins written for DX8. There are others besides Cakewalk's.

I think this is the difference between DX effects and DXi effects. DXi, DirectX 8 and above, can be automated DX effects can not.

Things like the Pantheon Reverb currently are not automateable, if there is such a word, but will be shortly when Cakewalk release the 3.0 plug-in patch.

Hopefully, this time it won't eat Middleman's Sonitus presets...
