Effects to Apply to Vocal Track

My friends and I are creating an anime rap (just for fun) and we're almost done. We have the lyrics written down and the background music created. The only part left is to record the vocals and put them on the instrumental. Since I'm still in high school and can't afford anything expensive, I have borrowed a Plantronics SP 500 from my dad and hooked it up. Just to test it out, I've recorded myself rapping and then listened to it on the computer. Crisp, clear sound - I'm pretty satisfied with the mic.

Well here's the problem. If I put these recorded vocals on top of the instrumental track, they don't sound like part of the song. I listened to other rap acapella's and noticed slight reverbs and little delay type of effects. Those acapella's sounded good in front of my music, but the vocals I recorded using MY mic just don't sound good.

I'm guessing I need to apply certain effects to my vocal track so that it blends in with the music. How should I edit the track?

Programs I have:
- Sonic Foundry Sound Forge
- Sonic Foundry Vegas
- FL Studio (Sequencer)

Hope you can help!

Thanks,
Dalal

- track your vocal parts normally. ( it doesn't have to be a perfect full take )
- import the "vocal track / vocal parts" into vegas.
- import the music track
- start editing your vocal parts and syncronize them all with the music.
- once the vocal track is ready ( make a full render of vox only )
- import it into vegas again ( twice ) now you have 2 identical vox tracks.
- use the vegas compressor to taste, on both vocal tracks.
- leave one track completely dry.
- on the 2nd track, add some sort of flanger, delay, echo, or any effect that you like.
- NOW... using the Volume envelopes in vegas, let the effect goes in the sections you want.
- once everything is ready, make a full render of the vocal track again.
- import that track again, and add reverb to taste. ( use the vol. envelope, to adjust the vocal, if you feel is out of the mix in some sections ).

make a full render. this time, with the music track of course.

have fun.
