i am seconds away from ordering my

Fostex VF80ex w/ free carrying bag
Studio Projects B1 mic with shcokmount n such

i was just wondering, any tips after i get it out of the box? should i reformat it or something? thanks a lot!

oh man im excited

Plug it in and record. Everything should already be formatted. Just follow the owner's manual in starting it up, and you should be OK.
Congrats, and welcome to the money pit that is home recording!

Don't reformat. It's almost never necessary, and it takes HOURS to finish.

Why not download the manual and start reading it? It'll help you get familiar with things. Start hanging blankets for a vocal booth.

vocal booth

i got some office cubical deviders, and beefed them u with rugs and blankets... boom instant gobo..

how to ...

Bill, will you please post a how to do a vocal booth hanging blankets?

Congrats
You are about to experience the roller coaster ride which is home recording - it has it's ups and downs - but it's great fun. Be warned, it is also addictive!

Enjoy

Another great idea. I am going to start putting one up. Of course for now, it'll have to be something I can take down when I am done.... :(

god im so excited! they never ship soon enough haha
i downloaded the manuel about a week or two ago and have been reading it a lot, itll be so much easier when its actually in front of me though!
for vocals, can i just sing into some shirts? in my closet?
and whats the best way to use a studio projects b1 to record acoustic?
where to point?

i know im soon gonna have a ton of questions to ask when i get it, so thanks a lot! i really appreciate everyones expertise!

i bought this instead of my car, is that dedication or what?

I think you did the right thing. A car for the cost of the Fostex won't last very long :D

I've been singing in my bedroom, which is a smaller than average master bedroom, and it's been ok, but not great. The closet idea seems to be ok, but I'm no expert. Try it and see.

haha man i need a job, 23 days till my 16th birthday, and i need 300 dollars so i can get my volvo... haha good ol first cars

but on the topic of things that are coming my way veryyyy soon...

the only thing confusing me about the manual so far is, why do you have to move tracks over to like 7 and 8 to master? i dont get it.

If you are going to burn it to cd, you would have to mix it down to a stereo file...

Yup, mixed very carefully first. You'll want to do several "rehearsal" runs through it before you mix it down to be sure it's sounding right. That's where having good monitors will come in. Then you can mix it down to track 7/8 and burn it to cd.

alright sounds good,
do you have any mp3s up from your vf80?

I use the MR-8, which is a step or two down from the vf-80, but the same company:

You can check out what I have done. The song "Daddy's Little Girl" is actually pretty terrible, but other two I am proud of.

You can compare the difference between good mixing and bad with these songs....

awesome! any tips on mixing?
Use good monitors (you can tell I didn't on one of them), and your ears.. if it sounds right, it must be. And use as many sources to listen to your mix too. Burn it to a CD-RW (So you can erase it and use it again), and listen to it on as many different players as you can: the car, your home stereo, a boom box, in headphones...
Note what sounds good and what doesn't and you can go back and tweek it. It takes some time to get to know how to mix properly, so don't get frustrated if it's not turning out right.
Check on here in the FAQ, and use the search tool to find other tips on mixing. And good luck!

Above anything else, just have fun with it. :D
