Okay, with my hand slapped I bring myself to the newbie forum.

My son and I created a home recording for our own entertainment. We took the russian version of a currently popular song english which has a better vocal performance but a really weak mix and mixed it into our own bass, guitar, and drum stuff. Gosh if it didn't come out pretty cool. It actually sounds like they sang with us. Have I mentioned that we did this just for fun?

I wrote up a little post about it in the mixing forum here, becuase we're the most proud of the mix on this thing and we're itching to hear some technical feedback. Minutes later, I've got some dooming copyright replies and troll threats (which seem to have been removed now), so I removed my thread.

Are we off to a lifetime of pumpkin soup in a russian prison for recording this thing and letting a bunch of people hear it?

Thanks,
-Robert

No, just dont try and sell it.
If you really wanna know the nitty gritty, ask bluebear

Gee... I've reviewed alot of covers songs from the clinic, never knew if it was a problem. What if he's not musician (don't play music, just engineer) posted just to ask... "How's my mixing skill ?" Should he get any copyright permission ? IMHO I don't think so... All I know is you can't post copyrighted song / material to NWR. That's all I know regards the clinic. I might be wrong... better ask Bleubear Bruce or Waldo for this...
;)

The song that was posted was NOT a cover tune.It was the original tracks with the ORIGINAL vocals of the group TATU.

Im sure Bluebear will know more about this but my take is that you cant duplicate and retransmit copyrighted material on the internet even if you are'nt making a dime off of it without getting permission from the copyright owner.

Waldo knows a lot about this.Maybe he can help you out.

To be very clear AGAIN.The song that you posted was NOT a cover tune but rather the original tracks of the russian version of the song "All the things she said" by TATU with some instruments of your own laid ON TOP of the original copyrighted tracks.

Here's the url to tha page.

I'm no lawyer, but although it IS in clear violation of copyright (since there was no permissions involved in the "remix" or in the redistribution of the song), I think that unless there's someone profitting from it, no one will enforce anything.

That being said, I listened to the track - I heard a lot of low-freq "unsteadiness" -- the low-end just wasn't solid. I suspect the "additions" caused some phase fluctuations with the bass that was already present in the track. To me, it sounded like someone played over the top of an already fully-produced song....

thanks

Heya Bluebear, thanks for the input. We only did it for fun and as a kind of "fan work".

More than anything, I appreciate the comments on the mix - which is all I was after in the first place. I wanted someone say say something smart like "phase fluctuations". Heck, now I have something to learn. :)

Kramer - I hear ya on what you're saying and I do appreciate you speaking your mind.
