My friend is looking into buying one of these things. The thing he was wondering is if after he records with it will he be able to import individuale tracks into his computer so he could edit them. i.e. add some delay to only the snare, lower the bass drum, ect. After this could he import the tracks back onto the recorder. (the last part is not so important because he could just burn them on to discs from the computer.

Yep.. you can burn all waves singular on CD then load them back in to the recorder. Of course, you can do extensive digital editing within the Vf160 many people like making use of computer plugins and such. I bought my Vf160 because I hated recording into the computer. (Sucked.. just sucked so bad it pissed me off)

Just make sure your friend gets one with a CD burner in it. (I think they all come with one now though) Another suggestion would be for him to do a FULL format on the harddrive when he gets home. It'll take several hours for it to format and check every single sector.. but this way he will know if the hard-drive is defective in any spots BEFORE he starts recording.

Your friend might be surprised how much can be done without ever leaving the VF160. The new VF160EX's all come with an internal burner. Makes great burns, though not as fast as some PC burners... Editing is easier and faster on a PC, but I do tons of editing on the VF160 and I find it an excellent machine to work on.

so is there a way to hook it up to the computer or just burn a cd. If you burn it on a cd you can edit individuale tracks?

Yes you can edit individual tracks, but you will need an audio editor program. To play the separate tracks on the PC you will need multitracking software/audio sequencer.
Recording on VF, mixing on PC is a good combination.

yeah I think he will get something like that. I have acid pro 4 and maybe I will sugest getting acid as well

if you want a great editing program (even 24 bit) try powertracks from pgmusic.com. only 29 bucks.
if you think i'm lying ask other users on the pg powertracks forum why they like it.
oh just by and by - it does 48 track recording as well has a great midi sequencer and mixes down etc etc. plus loads of built in fx.

any other suggestions for good cheap or free programs. How is pro tools free?

also this doesn't have xlr inputs does it? I don't see many from the picture. This could be a downside it would seem. He would have to get a bunch of new cables which doesn't appeal to him.

programs

many people here like n track 50. and it will go up to 88 tracks, uses vst and direct x plug in efects which are available free on the net, one thing though the newer version 4 is a little buggy, but 3.3 is very stable, they will get the bugs out soon enough im shure

this combination of recorder and computer will be a world of difference in your recordings, ....

Ok I think he is going to get one of these and use some software to edit stuff. He just wants to know if there is anything else that might change his descion.

It has 2 XLR inputs, which have insert points
You can use dynamic mics in the other channels if you have XLR to 1/4" adaptors
ACID pro 4 will be smashing

Look into the Tascam 2488 if you want 24 bit recording

he does have a lava lamp!

So what is the best way to get the individual tracks on the computer. We have not been able to find a way to do it yet!

Burn the multitrack files, in WAV format, to a CD.
Transfer CD to computer and import WAVs to your audio software.

(To burn WAVs on VF: use the 'SAVE PRG' routine from the setup menu, choose IDE, then WAV.)

Oh, yeh, there are two bits of advice in life, use sunscreen, and with regard to the vf160 or any other disk based recroding system TAKE BACKUPS every time you finish a session. Next time your disk might not spin up and your music is lost. It will happen eventualy, just a mtter of time.

Is there a wayburn more than one song on a disc at a time?

Yes. After selecting a MIX program for the first NON track, hit ENTER/YES. Then scroll to the second NON track, hit ENTER/YES. Scroll to the next MIX program you want burned. Hit ENTER/YES. Do the same for as many as can fit on a disk. After hitting ENTER/YES for the last one you want burned, hit RECORD/YES... Done.

This can only be done in the CDDA option, not in the BKUP option. Only one BKUP can be put on a disk.
