Hello, first I would like to state that I am really new in all of this, so this question might sound really stupid. Recently I recorded a demo and the final product was given to me in one big audio file, I want to edit this audio file into different separated songs, I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a program to do so in windows xp. I would be eternally thankful for any advice

Youre thread name contradicts itself to an extent.

From what i can figure out , you want one of two things.

1. To take a song and seperate it into different tracks (maybe one for drums and one for guitar etc.)

2. To take a very long sound file and break it down into sections so that you can make each section into a new song.

Choose which one youre talking about then I can try and help you more.

Well, my first initiative was your first point and remix all the elements of the songs in the file , but then I realized it was worthless because what I have isn’t a master, its just an audio file, therefore I concluded it was not possible.
But yes, I made a mistake leaving that thread title like that. What I would like to do now is to divide that audio file in the best way possible to make the separated sections into new songs..
And if there’s any way to separate the elements of the file into tracks for remixing, I would really like to know

Okay before you get ahead of yourself. Im pretty sure thats its impossible to break a song down into track so you can mix it yourself. I may be wrong but .. i think im right?haha

For your real situation , you can download a program like acoustica mixcraft from www.download.com

It would be a trial version for 7 days i think but you can still save and cut your songs. Im not exaclty positive on how you would do it in acoustica mixcraft but im sure it wouldnt be too difficult to find in the help section.

i would load in the big song , then cut out the part that i want. then delete the rest and save that mixdown and do it for every one of your songs. just make sure you dont save changes to your original clip.

thats the approach i would take to splitting up the track into different songs.
im not as smart as half of the people on this forum .. but hopefully this helped.

No, you can't break a song down into its individual tracks from a single file. To borrow, Blue Bear's example, it is like baking a cake, you have the ingredients, but once you bake it, you only have a cake, you cant go back and get eggs, water, flour, etc....

audacity.sourceforge.net

It's free, (no trial period) and has editing functions that will suit your needs just fine.

:D
