Editing EZ Drummer on Reaper?

I asked in the EZ Drummer thread in a different section of this forum, but didn't get an answer.

Pretty much by luck I found out how to delete a note form the piano roll = by clicking and deleting the volume bar at the bottom, not the note above. How do you add a note? I click in the piano roll, and get a symbol, but not the triangle or diamond symbol of the EZ Drummer notes, and nothing plays (no bar at the bottom - do I need to 'draw' that?)

First you need to download the Reaper manual and read the chapter on midi editing.
Everything is shown there with pictures.

Haha. The manual is helpful. But if you double click the midi item in the track view the piano roll comes up. Then you just click on the midi note in the top window of the piano roll and delete. To add,in the sam place youll see a little pencil. Just draw in a note where you want it and change the velocity to what you want.

Make sense? That's how I do it.

I read the manual chapter. 3 times. It assumes you al;reayd know how to edit MIDI.
'Change the velocity' - draw in a bar under the created note? I could do screenshots to show you it ain't working so easy - I add a note with the pencil in the piano roll and I get a non-triangle/diamond symbol that fills the whole space between the vertical lines, and hear nothing when it plays.

Hmm ok it seemed like too simple a question for you. I have no idea why it isn't working. Sounds like you're doing everything right. Do you have any other midi plugins to experiment with and see if it's a reaper or an ezdrummer problem? Uninstall, reinstall th bad one?

I have no idea other than a bad iinstall.

OK, I don't know what changed, but now it is working! Previously, when I added a note I was not getting a matching velocity bar below. Now I am. I'm still not getting a drum hit symbol, just a bar across the whole grid division, but I can live with that, as I assume that if I set my grid to a finer division (like 128th notes), this will cease to be a problem.

I always like when I go to bed and get up the next day and the computer has healed itself! I don't know why it happens a lot, but it's nice when it does.

I've just been playing with ezdrummer the last couple of days. I got the nashville and classics expansions, and they are so much more real sounding than the basic. Sounds great, now I just need to learn to use it!

I'm so glad I lucked out withthe $30 d/l deal on EZD, what are the chances that the expansion packs ever go on sale?

Also, what about the midi file packs they offer - it was hard to figure out if these are really worth it - there are 'fill' packs that look interesting, as I noticed right away that the fill groove options are a little limited on the basic package.

I don't know about the midi packs I was wondering myself.

The classics has some awesome kits and decent fills and some basic grooves. The Nashville pack has a good kit (I prefer the classic kits) but it has some really good fills that can be edited to be simple or complex. I'd high recommend dropping $40 for either one it's so much nicer than the stock kits.

I bought a few of the midi packs.

Save your money.

I would just use the defualt stuff that comes with ezdrummer and mic and match and custom chop them yourself.

Should you feel so inclined.

My issues with the other fill packs is that out of the possible 500 - 800 fills, there are like 5 i have used. the rest of them are just ridiculously over the top and overkill on the fills.

So unless your doing a hair metal cover the requires a lame 10 minute drum solo then these are for you.

Cool, thanks I'll save my $29. My only grip is that most of the fills are too crazy, even in the expansions. I basically edit out every other hit, or put it on 1/2x and drag and drop a slower version of a crazy fill. I do really simple alt-country kinda stuff and just want a beat that doesn't sound like a robot.

I did get the Classics and Nashville expansions for $39, I think with the packages I got, I paid $138 for EZdrummer and both expansions. If I'd known they were going up to $79 again I would have picked up the Vintage and Americana too. The Classics has killer kits that sound awesome, plus there's a 4 mic set up that sits really well in simple old-school mixes and you can use any of the three Classics kits with the 4 mic or full mic set up. The Nashville kit is too modern for me, but it isn't way over processed like the pop rock kit, plus it has some rad brushes and fingers.

Nashville has better grooves (IMO), but the Classics has better kits. If they ever drop back to $39 pick those two up. Very nice for older sounding recordings, or countryish stuff...as their names would imply.

I'll be keeping my eye out for sales. I've seen some folks offering download-only EZXs on Ebay for $39, but none of them are real music stores, so I question whether they really provide a useable 'key'.

or put it on 1/2x and drag and drop a slower version of a crazy fill.

I made a self realization two nights ago on this subject here!!!

If your playing around with fills created for certain BPM's and your song is nowhere near those BPM's like higher or lower, it can really affect the humanization of the fills in a very negative way. Since i started narrowing my searching for loops made for BPM in my range it's gotten less lame sounding... You should check into that.

You'll notice all your grooves are categorized by certain tempo or BPM's or whatever. Watch out for that.

Yeah I listened really hard for that. Some work some don't. Most of my songs end up around 120 or 145 for some reason, but I've done a few lately around 70, and it's impossible to find good 70-85 BPM fills, so I just took the 140 fills and put them at 1/2x. You're right, it really messes them up, so I had to do a lot of work to make them sound real again.

Also, I wish there were more 2-beat grooves. I've had to take a lot of 4/4 and turn them into 2/4 by adding extra kicks and snares.
