Hey If I have both cakewalk sonar and Cubase is it possible I could use a cakewalk effect in cubase and vice versa or just one when Im editing?

If the plugs are native then no.
If they are or any are VST/DirectX then yes.

If they are VST or DirectX like Stealthtech said then they should show up under your plugins list in both programs. I don't use Sonar, but I know that other programs that I have that use those plugins automatically scan certain directories for changes and update the plugins list.

Sonar can only use VST plugs via a wrapper. Sonar v3.0 includes the wrapper with the product. Earlier versions needed a standalone wrapper (which can be purchased from Cakewalk).

Most of the effects bundled with Sonar (even though they are DX) are native to Sonar and are not made available to other programs. They do show up in my copy of Wavelab under the listing of DX plugins, but when you try to use them you get error messages.
