I recording flat to analog tape through a Bellari Pre and a Neumann M147 large tube condensor. When playing back into my moniters, I have a harsh mid range edge coming from the high unwound strings (B&E). I have sent the signal through my parametric EQ and cut the 800 HZ a bit; it helped. I'm not satisfied with the results. I would like to try some other techniques. Maybe I'm doing something wrong too.

Try a small diaphram mic like a SM-81 or KM 184

Yeah

Sometimes tube to tube (mic to pre) can have that effect from being in line. Try the mic in a solidstate mixer input for comparison.

I have a Audio Technica 4031 but I
get a mid range problem there too.
I'll look into your suggestions - thanks.

Some suggested using a desser in the
side chain of my compressor. Interesting
concept...
