ECM8000 = Electret?

but, it requires phantom power...so, what is electret about that? wouldn't the ecm8000 just be a condensor?

Electret simply means the capsule is pre-polarized, so it doesn't need the voltage for energizing the capsule. It does use the voltage to run the on-board electronics. The ECM8000 is a condenser mic, but it doesn't use an external polarizing voltage on the capsule.
