What are the pros and cons on this card, and how well does it work with Windows ME?

I like mine... have had no problems. I have a Mia and an SBLive in my PC and they work together great.

Just make sure you check out the FAQ on Echo's website that specifys which motherboard/chipsets WON'T work with their audio cards. I've had several people ask me questions about mine only to find out they had cheap motherboards that gave them the problems, not the soundcard.

Always a good idea with Windows machines to check out the manufacturer for hardware compatibility.

Tim, I have recently ordered an echo mia and the salesman told me to stick with a P3 motherboard with intel chipset and win98se for best stability. I already have the aforesaid motherboard in my computer but was wanting to upgrade to something much faster like a P4 or even AMD motherboard with Athlon cpu. I would love the power of an Athlon to work with the greatest number of tracks and effects possible but was becoming resigned to getting a P4 for a bit more stability but now a P3!!!!!! Even with a 1.26gig cpu this would be significantly less capable of handling quantity of tracks and effects surely. I wonder what board you are using?

I may try posting this question elswhere in the "computer recording and soundcards" section to see if there is more info out there. It will be interesting when the card arrives to read what recommendations echo give. The salesman's angle came from feedback from others who'd tried P4's and went back to P3 - sounds possibly a bit over the top to me but would like to check it out before proceeding. I've even been told previously by another soundcard user that P3's run better and faster allround with soundcard recording than P4's but I thought he must have been drunk or mistakien at the time.

Cheers,

Nigel

PS just noted you suggested checking echo website so will do that first!

YM (where have I heard that name before) incase you haven't looked at the echo website yet here is what they say about your question:

Windows ME FAQ - Windows ME is compatible and works great with Echo cards. There is no special driver for ME. You can use the same driver that is used for Windows 95 & 98 or the WDM driver. Note that Windows ME is not the same as Windows 2000. If you would like to use an Echo card on 2000 then you must have a separate driver. Please refer to our driver page for a list of our drivers.

In regard to my question here is what they have to say:

GOOD NEWS FOR AMD ATHLON USERS!
AMD Athlon processors work great with Echo Digital Audio hardware. You will need a motherboard with one of the following chipsets:

AMD 760 ( Sometimes referred as 761,762 or 766)

AMD760MP (Multi Processor - Check www.Tyan.com )

VIA KX-133

VIA KT-133 & 133A

KT266 & KT266A (We have had a small handful of people complain about this chipset with Echo cards. We have also had people use this chipset successfully. We are looking in to the matter and should have feedback shortly. At this time we can not yet recommend them.)

What type of motherboard and chipset do you have?

These chipsets are now available on motherboards from numerous manufacturers. Click this link to get more information on VIA chipsets ( http://www.viatech.com/jsp/en/products/apolloindex.jsp ). Motherboards using the AMD 750 series chipset are not compatible with Echo Digital Audio hardware.

There are many motherboards like ASUS, TYAN, Etc. that work great. The only known board that we do not recommend at this time is ABIT.

What about AMD K6 processors (or an Intel processor with a non-Intel chipset)?

This may or may not work. Officially, AMD K6 processors and Pentiums with non-Intel chipets are not supported. Some users have enjoyed success while others experience lockups or other problems.

If you go ahead anyhow with a VIA chipset motherboard, it is known to have problems with IRQ routing in Windows 98 that cause our cards to not work properly. Some customers have had success with the VIA chipset and our hardware by downloading the latest software updates from the VIA website. Follow the link below to download a driver. If you are using an AGP graphics card, you should probably grab the AGP driver as well. http://www.via.com.tw/jsp/en/dr/driver.jsp

Sorry dragon/readers this is a bit long-winded but at least this closes the question of what Echo have to say on these matters. They are also conducting a survey to see which boards are the best for their soundcards but the survey question categories look a bit basic so I don't know how they think they will get grades of efficiency worked out from them. Anyway post in your board details to them if you're using an echo and they will soon produce their findings...
