My friend is giving me a G4 Power Mac to use for recording. I know nothing about Macs. I currently use a Dell inspiron. My interface is an M Box. The mac is pretty dated, probably 2003. That's the only info i really know about it other than it's in great condition. Am i better off with my laptop or should i take a dive into the Mac Ocean??

since he's giving it to you, I don't see the harm in trying it out. it would be fun to mess around with if you've never had an Apple before, but I wouldn't replace what you've got now.

I believe the 1505 is dual core? the G4 may or may not be dual-processor. also, you have to consider if your software will even run on Mac OS X or OS 9.

The question is whether to use a brand new Core 2 Duo Wintel setup whose FireWire ports have known compatibility problems or a Mac that is at least 4 1/2 years old?

Wow. That's like asking whether to drive a new Fiat Fiorino or a 1971 Mack Truck.

I wouldn't begin with either one, honestly, but your best bet would be to choose your interface carefully, making sure to find one compatible with your E1505, and then see how both behave. If all else fails, a new Core 2 Duo Mac Mini can be had for about $600. :D
