I recently got offered one of these from a friend for $70 NIB.... Is it worth it?

I've heard alot of great things about this, but not much about the ugly... Any one wanna gimme the dirty on one of these?

I'm currently planning to run it through a P4, 256 ram, 80 gig comp... I'm trying to record two vocals, 2 guitars, and one drum machine... then layer with bass and keyboards.

I'm curious about these cards too. Initially after they hit the market, there was a constant stream of posts in the forums with folks having problems with setup and compatibility issues with software, although sonic quality didnt seem that much of issue except for them being offspring of Soundblaster technology.

you can get a new one for $100, which you could probably return if you don't like it for some reason. You can also get a M-audio 2496 for $100.

I already use maudio cards. I was just attracted to the sudden flurry caused by the intro of the Emu cards a while back. It has died down considerably since then.

I'm not too sure. I often find most of the M-audio gear is terribly overpriced, but if it's worth my time I'd keep in mind to check em out...So what I'm hearing is check out the 2496?

I used Soundblaster for a long time and had a great time with them, but I was convinced to use mAudio's 2496 after being advised and exposed to the difference in quality from many sources. I see no reason to "try" something that has just recently made it to acceptible quality, when there is something availible that has a good history and has been so publicly preferred and acceptable for a good long time.

what pieces of m-audio gear are overpriced? compared to what?

mostly the usb/firewire audio interface stuff.

Yeah...I've thought about upgrading to one of these $100 cards that have come up in discussion here (either the m-audio 2496 or the emu 0404)...I only need to record one instrument at a time. I've now got a soundblaster live which I've seen dissed a lot on this board. I've read the back and forth in past threads comparing these two cards(2496 = stable drivers vs. the 0404 = unproven, but with more features, like hardware effects)...I think in a head to head poll on this board (as to which card was better) it was almost even (with the 2496 slightly in the lead)...

I hate dealing with buggy computer issues (which draws me toward the 2496) but I like getting something extra...I don't even really know if I would use the hardware effects on the 0404...I would like to know more about the the hardware effects on the 0404 if someone has some experience with using them.

That was what I was thinking also, I"m really drawn towards the 0404 for that, I've looked around and people say it has some problems recording at 24 bit or it completely kills the sound for their pc.... But I have a couple of boss guitar pedals which are pretty much the same ones listed for the hardware effects....

But for $70 NIB... I dunno lol

Yeah I'd go along with that. Their pci gear is about the best value out there, but the firewire stuff is pricey for what you get compared to other brands.

As far as the Emu goes, can't really go wrong for $70. I like the fact it's got the dsp chip

I've got the ProteusX which used the 0404 as a dongle so I've got it installed I also use a M-Audio 1010lt, The driver situation on the 1010 is a good as people say, and the 0404 has worked fine too, but I do use the 1010 as my i/o, just used to it, I can still use the hardware effects of the 0404, but let's put it this way I have Waves and I use them and haven't even bothered with the 0404 h/w effects, I've played with them and they will work OK but if you've got some good sounding plug-ins and the CPU you probably wouldn't use them, Next PMC I'm going to try mixing with only the EMU and see what it can do, that being said the actual sound quality of the card is on par with the 1010.

I got the 1212m...

My only gripe about the cards is the patchmix interface. It just takes some getting used to.

I use the emu-0404. It works great for me. The only problem it gives is it disables my onboard audio. Even though the manual says you can use it with other cards. not so true for me. I've had no problems with it. it may not work for you right out of the box that was a major complaint.

Why woudl you want to use your onboard audio?
Well the emu is not completly compatible with some games and apps. And I would like to use watch some movies and play som games in surround sound. At my work play we have video toaster PC. The toaster has a biult in audio card. In the control pannel you can select which card to use. Thats what I wanted to do. To be able to choose audio card.
