Ok quick question. I know i can't use condensers on kick unless i want to 'accidentally' retire a C1000S or something. but can i use standard dynamics?

I've used an AT4050 on kick before. Didn't retire it.
;)

There are some LDC's that are built to take high Db's.Some of the higher end LDC's feature -10 pads(or more) and can be safely used close to the kik.Notice...I did not say at the head! The ATM25 is one of the better swiss army knife kik drum mics out there.Set it up...turn it up...VOILA! instant kik drum sound of an acceptable nature.I use ATM25,Beta52,Audix D4,SM57(unidyneIII..old guy).I have used (quite a lot) RE20,MD421,MD409,SM7,Crown PZM,and many others.Once, for a speed metal drummer with two kiks, I put the PZM's in each kik and set two U87's a foot in front,in cardioid and facing the opposite direction.Sounds strange but it worked well and captured ALL of the freaking kik's of which there were at least 16 per bar the whole time!!!Another time it was SM57's at the beater and an 87 between the kiks in figure of 8.Ahhh experimentation.........!

IMO, the best reason to use a dynamic instead of a condensor on kick is to reduce bleed from the other drums. You don't want to inadvertently affect the floor tom when you eq the kick drum.

Don't overlook the Sennheiser E602---this mic has replaced my RE20 as a "go to" kick mic recently...in fairness to the EV, most of what I've been doing lately didn't lend itself to the "jazzier" side of kick drum micing, which is where the RE20 excelled...oh well, just have to use it as a floor tom mic or "smooth" lead vocal mic, not too shabby on a bass amp either...Back to the E602, this might be a one trick pony (sub-kick, "real" mid-definition) but it's a great trick, especially for heavier rock or hard-rockin' country...been using it live as well, can "almost" get away without a sub, as long as the venue doesn't get too volume crazy...like that ever happens:)
