A friend turned me on to Beyers recently, and I got an M61 and two M81s from eBay a while back. On my guitar amp, I remember my M61 sounding too bright, and my M81s sound cool, but lack a bit of bass and high end (could easily be my amp settings too, I've played with them a bit since then).

I plan on recording guitars direct and mic'd at the same time (I have a cheapo DI with speaker simulation that I run between the power amp and speakers), does anyone know how these mics are for guitar?

If not, I'm looking at getting another mic or two, which of these would you most recommend (from what I can tell, they're all good, but I don't really have the budget for all three)? I mainly intend on recording clean-to-overdriven-tones (think Deerhunter), nothing with heavy distortion:

Beyer Soundstar MkII (I hear this is like an SM7b for half the price...)
MD421
Beyer M201

The M61 and M81 are older mics, the M81 should work getting a sound you like - try moving the placement around in relation to the speaker of your amp (nearer the edge, or the center)
The Soundstar is an 'equal' to the Sennheiser MD421 - a vocal mic.
The M201 is the best one for micing an amp - but work with what you've got before spending more money.

Also, try to post in specific parts of this forum to ge tmore answers - this one should be in the Microphone section. Henry (moresound) can give more explanations on your mics..
