Can someone lay out the common differences between these two styles of mics? Im just trying to pick up on anything I can, and this would be a great help! Thanks a lot!

You might start by getting a loaf of bread, plenty of lunchmeat, a six pack or two of 2 liter soda's and a couple of pounds of coffee. Then get really comfortable and read the sticky "big thread" above.

The short answer, IMO, is that Condensors are generally less forgiving. They're more likely to pick up every little nuance, and if those nuances aren't that pleasant they will stick out like a sore thumb. If you have a singer with a great voice, and those nuances of his/her voice are very pleasant, as condensor can do some beautiful things by highlighting them.

Dynamics tend to be a little more forgiving, and when the right one is chosen can really make your voice/instrument sound like something other than what it is, in a pleasing way.

Particularly is this so when using ribbons, which technically aren't dynamics, but certainly aren't condensors.

YMMV,

That's one of the best explanations of the differences between dynamics and condensers I've heard in a while.

Good job.

I'll ad that I noticed that, during the presidential debates, they've been using what appears to be handheld condensers -- AT, I believe.

The problem with that, to me, is that it's a bit too revealing on Bush's voice. It sounds even squeaker, weaslier, and more annoying. It's way too revealing. :D That guy needs to invest in a good ribbon mic.
