I really new at this but can you record music on a DVD and then play it on a CD player?
 
A DVD player can play audio CD's, DVD videos, and DVD audio discs.

A CD player can play audio CD's.

Hey slack, is it a given that a DVD player will play a Video CD, or do I have to make sure the unit says somewhere on the box or front panel that it has Video CD capabilities.

The reason I ask is that I am going to buy a component consumer DVD player, but I want it to play Video CD's that I can make on my PC. I have seen DVD players that say they play VCD's right on the box, and others that don't mention it.

The DVD players they sell here for computers are hard-wired for a particular region, I'm told. They used to be able to play VCDs from anywhere on the planet, but now, when you buy your DVD player, you have to make a choice about which 'region' your player can handle. I think I'm in region 3.

They all play VCDs, but not from every part of the world.
 
Yikes! I had no idea that was an issue.

Do you know if component DVD players are the same way?
 
VCDs do not have region coding. They do have PAL or NTSC versions though.
 
Most DVD players do not play CD-Rs. So if you record a CDR or VCD on your computer, you're out of luck. However, some newer ones do, so jsut make sure you check this before you buy any DVD player, if that is your goal.
 
Okay, but the question still burns deep within my soul:
Will a regular, run of the mill component DVD player read VCD's? Is this an inherent ability just by virtue of it being a DVD player? Or do I need one that actually says "Video CD capable"

I am trying to determine if the ability to read VCD is a standard or an extra.

Yeah, just make sure it also allows you to read CD-Rs! Otherwise, you won't be able to read any VCD's YOU create... you'll have to buy commercial ones. And not all DVD players can read CDRs... though I believe they can all read VCDs.

It still sound unclear, even to me, and I wrote it!
 
I'm sorry for the confusion. I saw a computer advertised with a DVD that read, writes, and rewrites. I thought that would be the way to go until I started thinking. I could record my MP3's on the DVD but the only way I could play it back would be on a DVD. Is that a correct statement. I listen to CD's at work while I'm on the computer and I just have a portable CD player. So the new system I was looking at would do me no good. Is my thinking flawed?

There is nothing even close to a standard for DVD players right now, as far as I know most, if not all, DVD players play video cd's. Mine does and its relatively old now.

As for the reading of burnt Video Discs, you will probably need one that plays cd-r's.

The only way to be sure is to burn a video disc on your comp and then go to a store and test it.
