I was hoping to record a 10 second portion from a DVD movie for an intro to a song.

From the few threads on the subject I've been able to find, there seems to be no easy way of doing this, without running the audio outs of a DVD player directly into a recording device.

I just bought a DVD RW, thinking I could easily do this (and for backup). I do not have a soundcard (yet) as I've been recording with my MR8 (as some of you probably well know from my many stupid questions).

So is the only way for me to go, is to bring my MR8 to the DVD player and just record it?

are you just trying to keep it digital so there's no generational loss?
you can buy a DVD player that has digital audio out on it...but those are pretty expensive i think. I don't know why they don't offer consumer DVD players with digital out, though.

Actually they do have digital outs on most consumer DVD players now a days (at least from what I've seen). I have a couple of really ghetto dvd players myself, and even they have optical and coax outputs.

hmm, maybe it's just the cheap ass ones i've bought!
then there's your answer...find a dvd player with digital out

Windows Sound Recorder should handle this.
For XPClick on Start --- Accessories --- Entertainment
Unfortunately, the program only records one minute at a time. I saw you only needed 10 seconds, so you're in luck.

Play the DVD, and press RECORD at the right moment. Save to File, as WAV
Note: check the default format for Audio, It might be 8 bit mono.
There are a lot of options, such as 16 bit Stereo 44.1khz

DVD Shrink and DVD2AVI will do the job.

They are both free.
