What will sound better?
The reason I am asking is. I told my kids to get me the Cream Reunion on DVD or CD.
If I get the DVD and convert it to CD will it sound as good as the CD?

I know DVD audio is better quality, but do they compress the crap out of it and is it mastered for TV’s.

Does teh DVD not have a cd with it? Some of these have both. I haven't looked at this yet. And, I have some DVD's that the audio seems to be pretty damn good. We have a pretty nice home thater, and it sounds great playing through that. What will you rip the auidio with?

The DVD is only DVD. And it has more songs on it than the audio CD.
I was thinking of qoing toslink out of the DVD into my fostex VF160 to keep it all digital.
I know there is some s/w that you can rip audio from DVD but I have not used them yet.

It really all depends on the production and manufacturing or any given release. On some productions they have a different engineer or studio working on much of the CD stuff vs. the DVD stuff. You're right that technically the DVD audio foramt has more potential, but as to whether the DVD production itself will sound any better than the CD prodcution is often a crapshoot that could go either way.

As far as the Cream Reunion, I have not heard the DVD or the CD, but I did see/hear the local PBS Digital DT broadcast. I honestly don't think that the format is going to make a whole lot of difference; the source recordings will have enough bandwidth and production room to get to you fine either way I would think.

Thanks S-Side.
I think I will go with the DVD. It is only $2 more.
It will be a Christmas presant from my kids, But I will be paying for it.

You know you're old when...

...the kids buy a Cream recording for their father instead of for themselves.

Ah, yes, "Cream". The "Kingston Trio" of 21st Century fatherhood.

:D
