I need to transfer data from R2R onto an ADAT. Is it simply a matter of a snake directly to the ADAT or do I need to run to a mixer, then direct out to the ADAT?

An Alesis ADAT?
You’ll need a mixer to control levels so you don’t exceed 0 dBFS and cause digital distortion. On the other hand if your reel tape just happens to be at a low enough level it may not exceed the line of death, but you still won’t have fine control of your dub levels without a mixer of some kind. Even a simple 8-channel line mixer will work if you don’t need to tweak EQ.
