In what situations will I need a preamp/phantom power? I have a Tascam 424MKIII and I plan on buying some SM57s, Oktava MC-012s and maybe a AKG D112. Now these oktavas require phantom power, how am I going to get phantom power to these mics if my tascam doesnt have it?

Asking which side of toast to butter IS a dumb question...
(Not knowing about phantom power and asking is cool as heck, so keep the questions coming and learn all you can.)

The situations I suppose would be when you want to use a mic that requires power. (Usually Condensor mics... The sm57's don't require any powering... I don't know about the others)

To power mics (In need) you'd buy a Phantom Power Supply like in the link below, it goes between the mic and your Tascam and while it may seem strange, the power travels to the mic through the mic cable.
(There are several to choose from, so that should be discussed with someone here in more of the know than I)

Phantom power is necessary for most condensor mics (like the Octava) and ribbon mics, but not dynamic mics (like the SM57 and AKG D112).

You can look at getting a dedicated Phantom Power supply (as cheap as $35 a channel for the ART solution, up to a hundred a channel for high-end solutions), but if I were you, I would consider a slightly more expensive mini-mixer that will provide phantom power and oodles more flexibility, such as Mackie's Tapco 6306, which is $120 and features modest EQ, 2 sends, headphone outs, 2 channels of phantom power, 6 channels total, main outs, control room outs, external device inputs.

Of course, you can go with more deluxe solutions, but for $120, you will get a little audio toolkit.

I like "Audio Tool kit" Todzilla.
(Very nice way of looking at it.)

I personally see as defining proof of the idiocy of humanity that when confronted with the statement, "Press any key to continue", that people, hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, look down at their keyboards and ask "where is the 'any' key?!?"

Or the lady who complined that her coffe cup holder on her computer spilt her coffe when she hit the load button below the cd rom.
