I imagine that this question has been asked a million times or so, but I didn't seem to find anything exclusively about it in search, soooo...

What is a needledrop recording? and where would you get one? I have seen several websites mention something about needledrop(s), etc...so I was curious about the subject

Thanks
J.C.

Needledrops are libraries of ready made music for film, tv, commercials etc.

The producer will get a CD with loads of different music on it (having requested a certain type of library) and will select the track or tracks they wish to use. They then pay a single use licence fee for the use of the chosen pieces.

Obviously back in the day these were on vinyl and the producer would have to skip through the disc listening to the different tracks hence the term 'needledropping'.

Google is the shizzle. ;)

Backwards, actually. That's called "buyout" music. Needle drop royalties are just what they sound like---a royalty fee paid every time the needle drops. They're the exact opposite of buyout music.
