dumb connection questions: mac to monitors

I just got a pair of Alesis powered monitors. It'll be a while till my MOTU 828 gets to me, so is there a way I can listen to these speakers through the mac audio output??? It's a stereo mini-jack output on the back of a mac tower.

Can I use a mini-jack to RCA (2 mono signals) to 1/4" plug shimmy rig????

Any help would be appreciated.

Sure, why not?

But better would be a cable with two 1/4" mono plugs on one end and a single 1/8" stereo miniplug on the other...

k, i didn't know that sort of thing existed. time for a trip to radio shack to see what I can pick up.
