No, you're not stupid - you just need to learn about Phantom Power.... which is 48 volts supplied to a mic thru the XLR cable via your mixer. If your mixer doesn't have phantom power, you need to buy an external phantom power supply, or buy a small mic pre that provides phantom. I'd go for a decent mic pre if I were you...
According to the specs at this site: http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/oct99/articles/fostexvs.htm it does have phantom power. Connect the mic first, THEN turn on phantom power for that channel (only). When you're done, turn off phantom power BEFORE disconnecting the mic. (Otherwise you risk blowing your preamps.)
