Duets

Hey,

I've been working on a project for a few weeks now. I am really getting sick of this song, and really want to finish it.
The instrumental parts sit real nice, but the vocals are the major problem.
So far I recorded two vocalists, and both of them suck. so I decided on the only resonable thing to do: Pick out their better parts, and compose a duet out of it :)
The thing is, it sounds like exactly what it is - a whole lot of cut and paste. Has anyone ever tried to do something similar?

Most people cut and paste vocals but doing it with 2 different singers is a little different.

Not sure what kind of advice you are looking for. Are you haveing problems with the cut and paste or blending the 2 different singers?
 
My problem is making it sound a little bit more natural. So far it sounds obvious that it was heavily edited. My goal is to make it sound as they were singing together, where serrtain phrases were assigned to each singer. A truely impossible mission, I guess... :)
 
That's a tuff one for sure. Compression might help even things out a bit but it won't your two different singers in the same place. Good luck.

Sounds like you have a very difficult job to get the vocals where you want them.

I'd hire ONE GOOD VOCALIST, or find one for free. [You'd be surprised how many really good singers are around if you look and they'll sing for, maybe, a copy of the work?]

I'd let the good vocalist do both parts, one at a time. Well, maybe I'm all wet with this idea but it seems your cutting, editing, and pasting job is tougher than finding another voice.

Both of these guys worked for free. In fact, everyone who played in this demo worked for free. The difference that the instrumentalists were decent :)
I actually had one (female) vocalist that was ok, but the key was too high for her, and the thought of re-recoring everything... That'll teach me to record instrumental parts before finding someone to sing to them.... :o

Anyway, I think the result is pretty decent for what it is. The link s posted on the MP3 clinic if you wanna have a listen...

Do not fall into the trap of engineer as alchemist. Recut with talent and insist on a good performance. You can waste your life trying to turn water into wine and less savory metaphors. Better performances are worthy of the passionate attention you wish to apply to your craft, but they may not wait forever.
