im a noob  ok...

i have digital performer 5 :) and a nice mac. what i need to do now is get myself a nice mixer. I have been looking at the BEHRINGER XENYX 2442FX mixer which comes with a usb interface. my question is does this interface let u have individual track recording? (e.g if mic-ing a drum with 8 mic's all the mic's come up each as a separate tracks in the recording program so you can mix each piece of the kit separate) and if not what mixer or something to go with the mixer do i need to make all channels individual? im on about a max £250 budget.

cheers, Ollie

Ok, that 2442FX comes with an external USB interface. I had originally thought it was built it. You can view a pic of this interface here:

http://www.behringer.com/XENYX-SERIES/UCA200_big.jpg

Now, as you can see, this thing has two RCA inputs (stereo, meaning there is a left and right).

This being said, I am almost positive that you won't be able to record multiple tracks at once like you described. At best you would be able to separate the left and right inputs into two tracks.

Now, as you know a mixer mixes multiple signals into one and outputs it.

I am not sure how many tracks this can record at once, but you may want to take a look at this:

It has the USB interface built inside, so I would assume that you would be able to do a separate track for every input. I am not positive though. However, I know that this does multiple track recording.

The other option would be to get a really good interface that has a lot of inputs, and just use this (since a mixer will mix the signals).

Good luck.

"Nice" and "Behringer" are not usually used in the same sentence. The Xenyx is yet another of Behri's rip-off designs (the Mackie Onyx).

It sounds like you want a combination interface/mixer.

dude it wasn't in the same sentence and emphasis on the budget DP5 costs like £500 so yeah its probably a rubbish mixer i agree i was just using an example really, but wouldn't be nothing DP5 couldn't sort out anyway.

but yeah how about this one? i originally looked at it and thought it looked pretty good..

alesis multimix 16usb mixer?

"The MultiMix mixers also have USB audio, which allows direct computer audio interfacing for 16-bit simultaneous stereo input and output using standard recording software"

???

Emphasis on STEREO input/output. This means it is two separate tracks in. I think the Firewire ones of the Alesis mutimix may have more capabilities....don't quote me on that.

You ought to be looking for a firewire mixer/interface, not USB if you want that many tracks. Your Mac laptop has firewire if it's less than 9 years old.

All of these should be around your budgeted amount.

The Alesis is only 2 inputs although it is internal USB! It tends to not tell you this in bold, and one of my friends bought it and was severely disappointed when he could not record multiple tracks.

Above are probably your best options for recording in more than stereo.

What do you mean by "2 inputs"? From the picture it looks like there are 4 XLR inputs...

Inputs into your computer!

The mixer may have 4 XLR inputs, but these are mixed into a stereo signal before transmitting into your computer. So, what you mix at that moment in time, is what your stuck with for the rest of your life.
