hey, does anyone know if it's possible to automate the ducking technique in cubase sx, or get any plugins that would do this?... doing it manualy can get very very tedious

Ducking? Explain please. Even the mixing engineers handbook doesn't cover that expression :)

I'm assuming by the smiley your kidding? Ducking is an old term. Usually it's when an audio signal (typically music) it ramped down or ducks under a second signal (typically voice) so the second signal is predominant. May also be referred to as voice over compression.

usernamebob: If you have a compressor plugin with sidechain, you can accomplish a ducking effect (the link cordura21 provided explains it). This concept works this way: instead of having the compressor triggered by the signal from the track it is inserted on, the compressor is triggered by the signal of another track. This could be a simple way to accomplish what you're trying to. I'd try Google to search for "ducking plugins", but I haven't seen any yet (I'm sure there are some out there though).

yeah, but I havent been able to find any vst plugins that have sidechains, anyone have any sujestions?... or prehaps a direct x one...
