Dual Channel Recording

Hi,

I have a M-Audio Delta 66 and Cakewalk. I have been recording one instrument at a time. (just guitar and bass at the mo).

The guitar amp is mic'd and the bass id DI'd. I would like to record them at the same time. I have the guitar mic into the mixer channel 1 and the bass DI box into mixer channel 2. I have the guitar channel routed to STEREO OUT and the bass routed to GROUP1-2 OUT. However the problem is in cakewalk. I can only select one input. IE. M-Audio 66 1/2. I would like one track to record M-Audio 66 1/2 and the other track to record M-Audio 66 3/4.

Hope this makes sense. I can provide any more information that is required.

Have you ever been able to record from 3/4? If not, you need to find where to enable it. Someone that uses what you use should be able to help.

A work around for you would be to record the guitar and bass in mono. Send the guitar the left main out and the bass to the right main out. (pan them)

Record to mono tracks, track 1 will be guitar and track 2 will be bass.

Do you not have channel inserts in your mixer?

You should be recording guitars and bass in mono, not stereo. And you should be able to record up to 4 instruments simultaneously using the M-audio's # 1, 2, 3 and 4 inputs.

If your mixer has channel inserts, you should connect from them to the M-Audio card (note: you will only insert the plug half-way into the channel insert on the mixer - just until you hear the first click).

Then in Sonar you should be able to select as your input source, M-Audio 1/2 Left (#1 input), M-Audio 1/2 Right (#2 input), M-Audio 3/4 Left (#3 input), and so on.

If you are not able to select the 3/4 connections in Sonar, you must have them disabled somewhere. Try looking in the Options > Audio menu.

Cakewalk is a company. What program are you using? PA? Sonar? Home Studio? What version?

aahh channel inserts might be the way to go, but i still havent seen the 3/4 option available anywhere. I will take a look next time i am at the computer that has home studio 2002 installed.

Multichannel recording was only added to Home Studio 2004; 2002 only records 2 channels simultaneously. You cannot make full use of your Delta 66 in HS2002.

You need to upgrade in order to record more than 2 tracks at a time. Home Studio 2 has been replaced by Sonar Home Studio 4.

I have CW Creator 2002 that I got 2 years ago (I think) and I just recently decided to try to record so I bought a Delta 44 and a mixer. I found the same thing. Like they said...it appears to only let you do 2 inputs at a time. I just figured this out last night and looked on the CW webpage. I appears the CW Creater Pro will do 4 inputs. Less $$ if you are upgrading.

I only started at this a few days ago...maybe it would be better to upgrade further to something that lets you expand more? Thats what I am trying to decide. What is the input, people?...what do you think?

Personally, I am recording a podcast with more than one "live" hosts along with inputs from cd players and things like that...but I dabble in rough music recording which is when I discovered the inablility to record more than 2 inputs.

AND....The "open hardware guide" says":

"Please Note: Only SONAR 4 Producer Edition, SONAR 4 Studio Edition, Guitar Tracks Pro, Home Studio 2, and Music Creator Pro are capable of record and playback using multiple inputs and outputs. The maximum amount of inputs or outputs that our other programs will use is 2/2. Make sure that the capabilities of the Cakewalk software you own or intend to own are compatible with the audio hardware you are considering."
