I love mine...hmmmm Do's and Dont's.... Well, don't turn it all of the way up, because if you do you won't be able to hear anymore!
I keep mine at a maximum of about 2/3 maximum volume on the back in order to limit the volume in my little studio.
I also have turned up my LF amp to +1 to compensate for my tendency to over-compensate the bass settings in my mix. I am, after all, a bass player and love to hear that low end. By turning it up on the speakers, I found what I feel to be a great setting to counter myself. I.E., I boosted the bass on
the DS-90a's such that when I setup a mix that sounds good to me, then write that song to a CD, it actually sounds right in a stereo somewhere else.
In the same manner, if you tend to give your mixes too much high end, simply boost the HF amp on your DS-90a's a little at a time as you test your mixes elsewhere. Once you get it right, all of your mixes should be close to right on.
I use mine with
a VS840 and with Cakewalk Sonar. I love these speakers. Do be very careful of Digital feedback. What a scary sound it did make on mine when somebody was playing with a flanger and overflanged. Same goes for plugging anything in through S/PDIF and having mismatched settings.... and keep the master level down on your VS before you hit play...or it will blow you away
