I don't think I get it. Or at least get the benefit of it.

1st, the primary setup:

Cubase VST/32
Yamaha PSR292
Midiman Uno 1x1 usb adapter

If I select channel 1 in Cubase, make it a drum track, and record drums to it. They play back. I can change the program, MSB,LSB to trigger a different set on my Yamaha.

Now, i've read in passing a couple of times that drums should always go to channel 10. So, Why?!? They're playing on Chn. 1 fine.

I guess i'm missing something. Could somebody give me a clue?

Thanks,

Blind Cowboy...

CH 10 is the default drum channel for General MIDI. GM is just a way to organize all sounds in to similar banks so when you play generic midi files the right sounds play the right parts. Some GM keyboards only play drums on CH 10.

Since you are doing original music you can do whatever works for you.

So, the fact that I can trigger drums on the keyboard from chn 1 is the versatility of the keyboard?

I may then have a basic misunderstanding of MIDI.

My understanding is, that the MIDI msg transmitted to the keyboard tells it:
1. What sound to play
2. What note to play
3. When to play it
4. Vol,etc associated w/ the sound
5. When to stop playing it

(Not necesarily in that order)

So, given that, I would assume that it applied to all channels (1-16).

Now, if the "Sound to play" is the program number for drums, what would it matter?

Or, does this Channel 10 thing only apply to a keyboard outputing midi messages. Meaning any keyboard can receive MIDI drum commands on any channel, but can only transmit drum commands on Channel 10.

I'm just not getting it square in my head.

PS. Too damned bad your in Az. I've got a possum and a coon in the freezer I pulled off the freeway this mornin'. I'm gonna throw 'em in the cooker tonight and smok'em for sunday brunch.

lol.

The CH10 drum thing is only specific to certain devices that are 'GM compatible' ( but not all GM compatible devices are that restrictive).

It is usually only an issue with consumer keyboards that weren't really meant for pro use. They wanted to keep it simple so drums are always on 10.

The bottom line is that you can completely ignore ever hearing about drums on CH10 unless you happen to come across a device that only plays drums on CH10. Then it will apply.

Hey Blind Cowboy, did you finally get tired of the recording website?

This IS the same Blind Cowboy is it not?

Either way welcome on, this place rocks all day and night!

Yep. One and the same.

Ah, I ditched the RecWeb when "OldBob" took the place over. Can't stand the place now. I followed Dan and the Freedom Exchange over to his site and check in quite often.

I joined up here awhile ago, but just never posted.. (Between you and me, I'm digging it better than the RecWeb. Shh. )

I've also been building my own effects. Been hanging alot on a DIY forum that's excellent if your into that kind of stuff.

Cool thing is, my pedal board is f@$%ing rockin'.

Building your own effects?!?!? Fucking awesome!

Gimme a link to that site man. Post some pics in the studio buidling forum. We need a DIY/mod/repair section at this BB soon. I've been whining about it for a bit but things don't change very fast here.

But the freedom here is really nice, I never see my expletives changed to lame words I'd never say.

Glad to have you here.

Yeah !!! I wanted to build my own pedal too. I got basic electronic knowledge, and love to DIY project thingee :)

Still hoping for Dragon to provide the BBS with DIY forum :)

Anyway, glad to have you here too :)

Aw, damn..

I got into it after the RecWeb went down, to get my mind on something else than recording. It's fun, some are easy, and excellent feelings when you look down and see all your own stuff.

Want an original Fuzz Face? Or maybe a EH Big Muff, or etc.. then build it.

Here's a GREAT site with an excellent forum

Start here on your first Distortion Box (Electradistortion) It's nice and warm. Probably one of my favorites. I've built four of these. Everybody that plays one, love it.

Some other sites to look at:

http://www.generalguitargadgets.com

http://www.geofex.com
-------------------------------------------------------

And, a good place to order parts:

http://www.smallbearelec.com
-------------------------------------------------------

WARNING!!

This is an extremely frustrating, exhilarating, time consuming, thinking mans hobby.

There are pedals that cost hundreds new that you can make for $10 bucks.

and...

There are pedals that cost $30 bucks new that you can end up costing you $100 bucks.

So dive in with your floaty's on boys. Test the water's with that distortion pedal. You can get all the parts from Radio Shack, and it'll end up costing you about $15.00.

Have a good one,

Blind Cowboy...

Another place for electronic kits you may want to check out is PAiA.

http://www.paia.com/index.htm

They have been around since 1967. I've built a bunch of their kits and have found them to be very reliable. Also, the folks that run the show are helpful.
