I am going to record a Metal / Hardcore band next week, and we all know how they like their kick drums triggered / clicky. Now, the past projects i've done with bands like this their drummer usually hits different every time, and when I do everything it sounds different and shitty. I had to manually edit it out because I can't afford Drumagog right now.

All I really want to do is replace the kick drum, get a really good sound out of it. If someone could suggest a good, free (or a lot cheaper) alternative to Drumagog, or a really good miking technique using an AKG D112 for a Metal / Hardcore band with a 22x18 bass drum, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Take care,
Adam.

Well, there always the good ol' fashion way to do it I suppose.

Spend more than 5 minutes micing the drums. If you play around with it, you can find a good sound.

Have you considered a collaboration effort? I've gotten a bunch.. I MEAN A BUNCH of great stuff for free collaborating on the web. It seems a little weird at first but it can work.

Got a sample of the tune you're working on?

You should be able to generate midi events from each basdrum hit (read each peak between 0db and -30db or so), place them in a midi track, put all levels of each midi event to the same volume (100 or so) and trigger either a good sounding sample of the original kick, or replace it with another sample that sounds better. Might require some midi editing (bleed from snare hits get recognized as basdum hits and such).

Should work.. sounds a bit 'drumcomputer-isch' though..

+1 to KT drum trigger. I have used it on probably 10 or so recordings with great results. They key to it is getting good impulses, without excessive mic bleed.
