I've been playing the drums for a fair while...and i know what sounds good, but i never really learnt how to tune drums....

is there a way that you do it? a set sound that each drum should have? how is it done???

or am i just asking a fairly useless question???

Far from a useless question. Tuning drums is something that takes a lot of time and patience, but is worth it. It will vary from kit to kit as far as the different sounds you can or want to achieve. Here's a site that talks a bit about tuning:

There was a much better one but I can't seem to find it at the moment. This is obvious, but I find new heads the most critical part in getting a decent sound. As for pitch between toms, I seem to remember Shailat mentioning that a good reference point is to have the tom's close to "three blind mice" which I thought was kinda cool.
