whats up,

can anyone recommend a professional sounding drum software or any software that has pofessional drum sounds thats compatible with Sonar.im looking for acoustic sounds like hi- hats, cymbols, bongos, snares etc. Also,im not crazy about step recording like the one in fruityloops.Do they make software that will allow me to record in realtime with a metronome like i can with my drum machine?if not, whats the best way to record drums into patterns?

thanks

I have a hard time as well with recording drums. All I do now is search the web for free drum loops. They are easy to use and you can find some really great sounds and loops of all kinds of different styles if you look long enough.

I have not found any software that I like using, especially Fruity.

There are many sample cd's out there. My favorite by far is Drumkit From Hell.
I also use Discrete Drums, Purfect Drums and NYC Drumworks.
You will need a software sampler instrument to take full advantage of these. All these CD's also contain loops.
You can build your drumtracks using a midi track then use the samples for playback.

I used to use a VST softsampler called "LM-4" by Steinberg.

It comes with some killer kits from Wizoo that have several layers of sounds to different MIDI velocities actually trigger different samples. It kicks butt for what it is: canned drums.

I may be really screwed up, but I really enjoy the control offered by MIDI drum programing. It takes a while, but you can actually make a decent drum track. After a while, you have some stock drum lines that you can cut and paste in like loops that work at any tempo- then you modify it for the song.

A side advantage of that is if you ever get a decent MIDI module, all you have to do is route your MIDI drum track to that and you have even more sound choices. And because its a VST instrument and MIDI file, you can easily adjust the drum track after you've recorded the other parts to fit them better.

Its a lot of work, but I think it offers the best "canned drum" sound.

Take care,
Chris
