I posted a thread about drum samples recently, but then I was talking about replacing kicks from recorded drums, now it's something different. My dad asked if I could record a song as a christmas present so I was like "sure", but I wouldn't get a chance until christmas eve to record drums so I'm having to use samples, and having spent hours searching on the internet I now have quite a wide variety of samples on my laptop. Some good toms were hard to find but I did find some eventually. In terms of them in the song, I am actually very happy with how the samples are sounding: a good engineer would probably be able tell they were samples, but my dad won't, although I will probably tell him anyway.
So my point is that I didn't actually realise that using samples could be that good, I thought they would sound way too unreal so I haven't bothered up until now, glad that this situation has arose!

Very cool for you. We are glad to hear that you have been re-inspired about recording. You are not alone, though. Thousands of people use "only" samples for a lot of instruments. Thanks for the update.

What software are you using to arrange/create the beats? I've never done it before. I've always just recorded drums, but I may have a need for it someday as well.

I didn't bother with software, don't really have the time to get my head around another programme, just got some samples and did it by hand and used quite a bit of copy and paste :)

You'd be surprised how realistic samples can actually sound. Obviously if your setting all the velocities at 127 it's just bound to sound fake. It makes a huge difference if your playing around with timing and velocities.
