Drum rythym machines

whats the best method & or device (other then wav.'s) to record?
I want to have drums & bass etc.. on seperate channels.

I'm more of guitar player songwriter, don't play drums or bass so was thinking about getting a drum rythym machine like the Boss dr-5 or ?

How do you guys do it?

I don't know about the boss, but some of the zoom models have bass built in. I use the zoom 234...

I use to Boss DR670 which provides drums and bass. I can't say I have used the bass as yet though so I don't know how good it is or how easy to program.

I use a roland M-BD1 rackmount MIDI drum/bas module. I sequence the parts in Cakewalk and use MIDI sync to the MR-8.

This way I can mute the bass part and record just the drums in stereo to tracks 5/6. Then, mute the drums, un-mute the bass, and repeat the process, recording the bass to track 4.

This way a sound module with stereo outs, and a recorder that can only record two tracks at once can still record stereo drums and mono bass on three separate tracks, all in sync.

I have the DR670 like Paul does and I really haven't tried to program it. There are various ways to do it. It comes packed with so many good presets and some that you probably would never use. The Bass sounds on it are very good although being a Bass player I prefer to do it myself. You can play any preset with or without the pre-programmed Bass part. If you use alternate tunings you can also change the pitch or mimic a 5 string bass. There are literally hundreds of drum sounds and there are setups with complete kits so they're ready to use with minimal effort. I'm very happy with mine and pull it out when my drummer gets out of line! ( I Kid, I Kid!!!)
