Drum replacement?

Mixing and Mastering.
I'm looking to replace a recorded kick drum track with samples.
Is there any way to do this using MIDI and gates, so I don't need to get Drumagog or something like that?

Cheers,
Eck

load up your kick track and MIDI editor, and paste in a drum hit on top of each kick

then mute/delete the kick track, leaving only the MIDI samples in its place

I was hoping for a way for the original kick track to trigger a set of kick samples I have or at least 1 kick sample.
I'd be as well just copy and pasting in the kick samples rather than penciling in each MIDI note wouldn't I?

Cheers,
Eck

I would imagine there is a plugin that will create midi notes alligned to the transients of an audio track. I use Sonar and it has a built in feature for doing it. I can't point you to one though...

He is a "Crystal" user!

What editing program are you using? I use Cubase at home and I have a VST plug in that you use as an insert effect to trigger midi sounds.

I forgot the name of the one I use but check this out:

Yeah I use Cubase SX3.
Cheers man.

I don't like Drumagog. I tried it at my mates bit and when I gogged a track (rendered it) each hit was a slight bit out from where it was meant to be. Some ahead and some behind. I played about with the latency settings in drumagog with no luck.
Plus I'm skint so I couldn't buy it even if I wanted to (which I don't)

Thanks all,
Eck

The lastest versions of Drumagog DO NOT suffer from that. You must have been using an older version. The last version I have used was 4.02 and it is VERY tight to the original track.

That was in Sonar at least. ;)

I had a go with that drum replacer. Its really good. There is latency but every hit is at the same latency so I can easily match up the rendered file with the original file.
Only draw back is you can only load up 4 different samples. I'm only looking to use it for the kick drum, but I think 4 different samples isn't quite enough.

Good find though.

Could have been an older version as it was a good while ago.

did you consider that a lot of others successfully use Drumagog, so maybe the problem's not Drumagog.

Drumagog works freeakin fantastic. I use it with SX3 all the time, and it puts the hits exactly where they were. (at least as close as any other plugin - the ADC in Cubase works pretty damn well IMO)

There is a chance but at the same time my computer can handle mixing pretty well. Ive had say 50 tracks with at least 20 or 3 plugs on each track, and my system just starts to slow down then.

I think it was an older version. And also when I render things my computer has no latency atall becuase its not rendering in real time.

What is ADC?

You need to shut of the "auto align" feature. It tries to align the phase (time-wise) of the sample with the slope of the original kick. This is good for supplementing (hearing both the old kick and the new sample), but sucks for total replacement. Drumagog is way too deep too play around with for a couple hours without consulting the manual, and getting stupendous results.
