hi im totally new to this.
i have about £1500 to spend.
i am a drummer and have recentley just brought 12 drum mics.
i have seen something called a mic pre-amp.
but they only have 8 mic imputs, i wonder if i can hook 2 mic pre-amps up.
i also want to know where i go from the mic pre amps?
do i go into a sepreate amp or go straight in to a mixer then into speakers?
if i can put them through mic pre-amps will i be able to connect all 12 mics to a mixer on sepreate channels as i want to control each drum on its own.
i also want to mount it all in a rack and wonderd if you feel i would need an EQ or a compressor or even a gate?
i know nothing about this subject and need all the help you can give as im only 15 years old.
any help my e-mail address is markjones196@yahoo.co.uk

Give us a little information about what you are recording to and what sort of equipment you have..

If you have 12 microphones, you'll need 12 mic preamps. Your best bet here would be a mixer as they have mic preamps in them. Something like a Mackie 1604 VLZ would work nicely for you.

I'm afraid you don't understand son, the mixer you refer to already has MIC PREAMPLIFIERS, you don't need to buy 8 more.

here yah go

for 1500 bucks and you want to record drums? why dont you just get a 24 track digital mixer/recorder? has built in mic pre's enough inputs for your mics and record it all to one unit. check out e-bay for the best deal or just get a new one off musiciansfriend.com

It's actually more like $2300.00, he did afterall say that he had 1500 UK pounds to spend.

You can get really nicely set-up for that. Since you're from the UK, I hear that the British mixers have much better pre-amps built into them than the ones more readily available here in the states (we can get those here too, but they are pricier. Maybe you can do better?).
A stand-alone is a good investment, but most people are not entirely happy with the quality of pre-amps in most of the stand-alone units and still add on external pre-amps.
But they will work for you.

If you want to record your gonna need some sort of recording medium, which you haven't even mentioned yet.

I would recomend a MOTU system if you want to record 12 at once. Another popular choice would be 2 Delta 1010's. For both of these you will need a fairly good computer. And software.

Unless your recording only drums, your also gonna have to bear in mind that those mics you have aren't gonna cut it for the rest of the band, ie. Vocals and Guitar, unless you have an SM 57 (MAYBE).

Both those mixers you were looking at had built in pre's, so don't waste your money on getting the seperate pre's. Believe me, theres better stuff to spend your money on. Have you get stands for your mics? Your looking at £240 just for stands for your 12 mics and about £150 for leads.

I'm only 18 mate and I have taken years to build up a half decent system, so don't think that £1500 will get you what you want.

If yor looking to buy from America also remember shipping on a lot of those items, you may even need to pay import duties.

And where the hell does a 15 year old get £1500?!

Neil
