I'm not sure if I should post this here but........
How does one record drums? How do you minke them? Should you record all the parts to one channel? Or what?

I minke them with my minker (left or right hand).
Sometimes I just boink them (left or right hand as needed).

OK seriously

Actually there are as many opinions as there are people.
If you are recording Jazz /Folk etc where the drums usually sound more natural a very common way to mic them is 2 mics overhead, some times adding a snare mic and a kick mic. If you are looking for a more aggressive sound you can mic every piece of drumset with multiple mics and manhandle the sound to your liking.

Generally I allocate 4 tracks for drums. One for kick , one for snare, and 2 for a stereo mix of the set.

A bit of advice... go with the fewest number of mics you can to get the sound you are looking for. The more mics you use , the more bad interactions you have to deal with (phase cancellations etc)
If you want more info than you can digest use the search function here and look up what you want... and sit back and read.

Welcome Chewie. Yeah, what tmix said. Look around, do some searches through this and some other forums. There are all kinds of threads about micing drums. After you do some research, come back with more detailed and knowledgable questions about specifics. That way the people here can better help you. Good Luck

I think I now know what to do if I ever get lots of money. But if all I have is a pc and a mic. What can I do with that?

I don't want to spend anything. So what can I do with one mic and a PC.

You can wish you had more mics and more inputs.

walk around the kit with one ear plugged with a finger (Harvey tip) and listen for a well balanced kit....put the mic there.....

thats the best you can do with what you have......

there was a thread on this not that long ago in either this forum or the mic forum titled something like: how can i mic a drum set with just one mic?

there was some stuff there that you can use.

I HAVE RECORDED WITH 1 MINKE BEFORE AND MY BEST RESULTS CAME FROM PUTTING THE MIC ON THE FLOOR. IN OTHER POSITIONS I TENDED TO LOSE THE KICK.MY ONLY PLACEMENT TIP OTHER THAN THAT WAS NOT DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE KICK BUT TO ONE SIDE (SNARE SIDE).OF COURSE THIS ALL DEPENDS ON IF YOU WANT A GOOD DRUM SOUND OR NOT:)
