so heres the deal i have a superlux fk2 on the kick and a sm57 on the snare but i dont have a matching pair for the overheads. the only suitable mics for the job would be my nady cm90 and my mxl 990. could i use these together to get a good stero drum sound or should i save up for a new cm90/or mxl?

why don't you try it first? I'd put the mxl 990 over the snare (on the left) and the cm90 over the floor tom/top right cymbal pointing towards the snare... then just test it out. if you don't like that positioning, you can go with XY or whatever you fancy. I'd test it out before I shelled out more cash. if you're not satisfied... well... even if you get a new mxl or cm90, they won't be a matched pair. they'll just be the same brand.

I use a pair of MXL 991's for my overhead. really happy with them (and the work great for top end of acoustic piano and fretboard on an acoustic guitar.

I got mine as part of a $99 combo with 990's a while back,so I'm guessing they're very affordable... check out e-Bay
