Well first you want to start with tuning the drums (on top of being a good player). Tune them to the music you are playing, and to your likings. There are tons of online tutorials that show you how. Next you want the room to sound good. Experiment with thick blankets and any other absorbent things like couches or beanbags. Then you want to have at least halfway decent mics. Experimenting with mic placements is a huge factor in this. First, get the overheads to sound good. Make sure they are in phase and give a nice balance of your kit. Add the kick mic next. Get the drums to sound like they are almost mixed. Add the snare mic next. Try to get a good balance of snare top and snare bottom sound from that mic. A lot of snare bottom sound comes from the overheads too. The toms are last. Just make 'em sound good. Check out Greg_L's General Rock Guide in the drums section of this forum.
