There is a thread a few spaces down on a drum problem which helped me slightly however im also looking for advice aswell.

My band punk hardcore etc. we decided to record a demo recently, im the drummer and have a slight interest in music tech so i decided that i would record the drums then mix them then add everything else after that.

So i booked a practice studio and borrowed my friends BR864 Boss 8 track and Samson Drum mics (there clip on ones plus two overheads and a kick drum mic) I came out of the studio and put them on my computer for i was getting ready to mix it all in cubase sx,i put the tracks on their and it sounds terrible (aside from the terrible playing ;)) it just sounds horrid, the mics where clip ons and where only about 1 inch from the skin yet it still sounds about 10 metres away, the cymbals sound tinny etc.

I couldnt record each mic individually so i just recorded it all together, i have uploaded the track so you can hear my problem and perhaps help. I just want to make the sound more tighter and just generally better.

NOTE - I do have a set of old electric drums which i could record on into the 8 track however it may make it sound fake and tacky, PLEASE HELP.

Much appreciated.

The overheads are way too loud and everything is distorting. If you can't keep everything on a separate track, you are going to have to get a better mix on the way in.

BTW none of the sounds are terrible. With EQ and compression they are workable, however, the distortion is something you have to avoid.

thanks very much, is there any way of making it sound useable without re-recording, such as just like compressing it all and then adding eqs? thanks again.

That won't fix the distortion. I think there may be some phasing issue. Since it's all mono it sounds kinda dead to me.
