which do you prefer, if not these, what others. I'm still up in the air on what to buy.

The SM-81 is a good choice but........I never used a 451 so I can't say if that is a good choice too!!!!! 81 is good for acoustic guitar and piano congas, assorted percussion. It has a very flat response as well.... I have used some others for OH on drums but come back to the SM-81. KM -84 neumans
are nice but $$$$$$$$$ twice as much

If those were my sole choices? I'd go with the 451's.

And I'll second the KM84's, those are great mics's for overheads.

If you're looking for economy, look into the MXL 603's. I switched to the 603's from SM81's....there was just something about the 603's liked over the SM81's.

The sm81 makes cymbals sound more like cymbals, less coloration, less hype in the high end. The pattern of the sm81 is more narrow than the 451, so placement is a little more touchy. Been using the 81's a lot for OH these days and think they sound pretty natural overall.

Rode NT4, its a dual overhead try one out works great.

Its the only one I have used so don't know how it compares.
