I've been thinking of getting a pair of josephson c-42's as drum overheads. i currently use a pair of rode nt5's for overheads. i have one josephson and i use that on hi-hat. both mics all detailed and clear to my ears. the rode's are bright as overheads but not too harsh. has anyone used both as overheads? any preference between the two? would the josephson's be an upgrade over the rodes? or should i stick with what i have? any info/opinions would be appreciated. by the way, i do mostly indie-rock music.

I have josephson c42's. They are bright. There is a lot of 6-10khz. Haven't tried the other mic you speak of.

You can here the josephsons on the track in this thread:

I am not that great at engineering, and the drummer's cymbals weren't in good shape(circular crack all they way around the ride cymbal, etc) so you could probably get a better sound than this, but here is at least an idea of the brightness of the mics.

The Rodes seemed brittle sounding to me. Much preferred the Shure SM81's to the Rodes. Sorry, no experience with the Josephsons.

Haven't tried the rodes except for the execreble NT-1A but I'm very fond indeed of the C42MP.

how do you deal with the brightness? Do you use it for acoustic guitars?

They're great for capturing exploding drums!!

Here's the datasheet:

You can see a 4 dB peak from 6 to 10 KHz, which will give them a bright sound.

I still want him to make the C41... the omni version. He says he'd like to, but the capsule is "difficult."

Cheers,

Otto

Great

thanks for the help. i'm gonna demo a second 42 from mercenary, and see how it matches up with the one i already have.
