Anyone ever heard of Nady drums mic's? I found a set of 4 snare/tom mic's and 1 kick for $180. This is about my price range but I don't want to waste my money if they suck.
I saw those as well awhile back in the AMS or MF catalogue... I seriously thought about buying a set but got cold feet when I couldn't get any info on them 'cept the price. Nady is dropping a lot of cheap mics on the market right now. I'd really like to hear some reviews on some of them.
There's nothing worse (well maybe there are worse things, but not in this case!) than a good drum sound being recorded by crappy mics. Drums are one of the most difficult instruments to capture on tape well -- why make it more difficult by throwing cheap mics into the picture???
Here's what I'd do if I were you - buy 4 used SM57's (for snare and 3 toms), get a used Audio-Technica ATM25 or Sennheiser D112 (for kick), and a decent pair of small-diaphragm condensers (Audio-Technica AT4041s or even Rode NT3s) for the overheads.
Yeah, we're talking a bit over a grand here, but A) you'll get a great drum sound, and B) you can use those mics for other things as well!, and C) you'd never need to buy another mic unless you get into recording as a serious business....
As is the case much of the time in the audio industry - you really DO get what you pay for...
Bruce is right on the money ...
I'd say Oktava MC012 for overheads, tho ... you could get a M1/M3 large diaphragm capsule later on which could be a pretty decent vocal mic too.
Just a little side note, I had a band in over the weekend to do a demo and the drummer insisted that I use his Audix drum mic kit he'd just purchased and they were REALLY bad. I screwed around with them for a while and couldn't get them to sound right so I ended up with 57s on the snare & toms and a D-112 in the kick. Audix bad, Shure good.
I was playing at a festival this summer and the sound man who does this gig for us every year had a audix mic for kick. Crap!!! I sad "hey frankie" I said throw a 421 on it. He said "Jim""I've never tried that before" Yeah, I thought the same thing, but anyways it sounded grreat and the audix was BADDD!!!
actually today i got to try out that same mic set from nady. they kick drum is good (better than a sm-57) and really all the other things sounded just like an sm-57 (or better). i mic'd one tom with a sm-57 and the other with one of the nadys. couldnt tell any difference in sound.
