Been using 57' & 58's (reg and beta) re 20 on kick, 184's oh (or mk012). Would I benefit from getting any others? What are you using?

Sounds like a pretty good setup to me. I want an re20/sm7 for kick. I was using a d112, but just switched to an e602, which works a lot better for me. I use a 57 on the snare, 184's for OH's (or sometimes mk012's - though they are a bit dark). I plan on doing some heavy duty drum recording on Dec 3rd- with the above setup and a pair of um92.1's for room mics, and a r-121 in front of the kick. i can't wait to hear it! :D Oh ya, and I use Audix d2/d4's on the toms.....

scimilar setup here Kenny. RE 20 on kick, 57 on snare and 2 SP B1s as overheads. I get quite a fat sound out of the overheads so don't really need any more thump by individualy micing the toms at this point.

I'm recording in an 8' x 10' with a 7' ceiling, all outside in walls covered with carpet over 4" rockwool. Completely dead, which is the best way to have such a small space I find.

You have the carpet over the rockwool? So are the panels covered individually in the carpet, or is the whole wall, including panels covered in carpet?

There are no pannels as such. It's a room within a room on a floating floor with suspended ceiling. All the walls are built outside in on 6"x2" studs, 4" rockwool in the cavities, 2" airgap and all covered with a woven back carpet. Mucho deadness! Only drums get recorded in there

I like double micking my snare...I use a 57 and a M201 - alternately top and bottom...

Though I usually use a D112 inside the kick, I also occaisionally double mic the kick as well - usually on a kick with two solid heads...I use an MD421 on the beater and an D112 on the outer head but that's cause that's all I have to use on them.

I've used MK012's, pro37r's and ECM8000's as overheads. I reach for my MK012's almost exclusively now. I wanna get another NTK or 4040 (see below) and try stereo LDC's for overheads...I hear it can be really good for making a kit seem 'bigger' - whatever that means...I'd also like to try an MS technique someone once talked about here.

What about a room mic? I used to use a C1 (all I had) but since then I've got a 4040 and an NTK - haven't had a chance to compare them for this.

Last drum recording....
Kick - Sennheiser 602 and AT 4050, D&R preamps, no compression
Snare Top - Shure beta 57a with an Oktava MK012 taped to it, D&R pre amps, no compression
Snare Bottom - AKG 451, D&R preamp, no compression
Hi Hat - AKG 451, D&R preamp, no compression
Rack Tom - EV 408e, D&R preamp, no compression
Floor Tom - EV 408e, D&R preamp, no compression
Overheads - AKG 414's, Chandler TG2 preamps, DBX 165a compressors
Room Mic - Royer R121, D&R preamp, Distressor

Kit sounded great for this last session. Of coiurse it was also a drummer who tunes his kit really well, and has a solid sounding DW kit with a Craviatta snare. Most importantly though, his technique is impeccable. He has excellent dynamics, and every hit is spot on.

Kick - Audix D6
Top Snare - Shure Beta56
Bottom Snare - EV N/D408 or Audix i5
Toms - Audix D3's
Overheads - MXL V57M's

Cheers,
Zach
