Drum mics too hot at lowest gain

My guess is that you are coming out of the Behringer insert at line level and going into the zoom using the Mic inputs. If you go into the zoom through the 1/4 line inputs, you may have better luck.

Unless you are clipping the Behringer, but that would have happened in your previous setup, when you were using the direct outs.

At the very least, make sure the input gains on the zoom are all the way down.

I really can't imagine that a Behringer mixer will have preamp so much better than the zoom that it would make a night and day difference. The more stuff you have in the signal path, the more chance for noise and gain structure problems you have.

And most affordable gear with mic/line inputs just puts a pad on the mic input and feeds it to the same preamp. You're likely not avoiding the Zoom preamps, just adding the Behringer preamp and a pad.

By the way, for dynamic mics you could use an XLR-TRS adapter and go into the line input to exploit the pad.
