Drum Micing

Do you have to use overheads? cause I am purchasing a cad pro 4 piece mic kit, and I only have a four input mixer for now. can I just use them w/o overheads? or will they not pick up the cymbals enough?

Use overheads. 4 inputs - kick, snare, 2 overheads.

Definitely use overheads, they add a lot of "air" to the kit and help get a natural sound. If you use all close-mics, the drums will probably sound quite strange

I think overheads are a must. You can mic the whole kit with 3. A pair of OH and one for the kick.

I use 3 OH's. Two unidirectional mics L and R and then a cardiod mic dead center. Seems to be a little more depth to the cymbal crashes since I made the switch.
