Hey, I am on a low budget and I was wondering if I got a condenser mic to mic the whole set if it would sound decent. I do not have nearly the money to buy a complete drum mic set. Also, would one condenser and one dynamic work? If so, how should I place them over the set? thanks, derek

I recorded this "Ode to Joy" clip with one CAD M179 overhead and an ATM25 in the kick:

No EQ on the M179, very little on the ATM25. It was a quickie fun project so it's nothing serious, but a good snapshot of those mics.

Placement was M179 overhead maybe 7' off the ground (probably 18" above the cymbals) pointed at the snare, drums positioned in a corner. ATM25 was maybe 7-8" back from the beater inside the drum.

Speaking of it, how do you like the M179? The drums seem to sound good on the recording, thanks.

I'm looking at the M179 and M9 (maybe VSM) What can tell me about these two.

I really like them on drums, I use them a fair amount on finger picked style acoustic playing, some amps, some vocals, as room mics...it's very versatile. The mic is fairly natural with an open top end, but not overly bright.

Glad you like the recording, just one over the kit did it for that one.

Deepwater, the M179 is very versatile due to a mostly neutral sound with a nice open top end but also those variable patterns. You literally roll the pattern selector around with your thumb until you hear the amount of room sound you want and you're done. Mics costing many times this don't have this feature and it's a cool one for sure. So yeah, it's OMNI, CARDIOID, FIGURE 8 & HYPERCARDIOID and everywhere in between if you like.

The M9 is the tube-i-est sounding tube mic out of the two models currently offered by CAD (the other is the VSM...they discontinued the VX2). The M9 possesses a very strong low end response, a somewhat softer midrange and a fairly natural high end response (not a bright mic). For tube mics in its price range, it can't be beat. Oh, and it looks cool as all get out.

CAD is also built in the USA as well, if that matters to anyone. Doesn't always make a product better but it's nice to know our brothers and sisters in the USA have a few jobs left in gear manufacturing anyhow. ;)

Now...while we're on the subject of tube mics though...the CAD VSM is a real strong step up from the M9. Strong low end, strong midrange, and as close to a perfect top end you're going to get for most vocal work, guitar cabs etc. Kills the NTK in my opinion but some may disagree. The NTK is just so damn sibilant on vocals so often...the CAD VSM is very strong in the vocal area without all those hissy S's.

That's incredible. Possibly the best mix I've heard from a single OH. Did you muffle any of the drums or anything? What kind of set is it? What polar pattern did you use? That sound is just...wow. Great job.
