You know, I know nothing about drum machines, but I want to invest in a nice one for my solo recording stuff.

Can anyone suggest a good one that has many different patterns and sounds?

I'd sure appreciate it!

Drum machines suck. Get a sequencer.
Yamaha QY-70
This one has tons of patterns, sounds and 16 linear tracks with 8 pattern tracks. Tempo, key, pattern and quantization editing don't even scratch the surface. The accuracy on linear recording beats and other instruments is 480 clocks of resolution per 1/4 note. It is BAAAD. And it comes with data filer software for backing up sequences to PC or MAC. It will grow with your studio, as complicated or as simple as you want. Hell you could run a pro light show with the MIDI control it has.
The QY-70 can even be used with headphones and batteries for writing beats and beds in a coffeshop, it's tiny alien technology...I can't say enough about it and I've had many drum machines.
